Planet Pluto Facts

1. As of 2006, Pluto is not longer considered a planet, but rather designated as a “dwarf planet,” meaning that it is a planetary-mass object being neither a planet nor a satellite. Pluto was declassified as a planet by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

2. Pluto is the smallest dwarf planet in the Solar System, smaller than Earth’s Moon, and half the width of Jupiter’s moon, Ganymede.

3. Pluto’s journey around the Sun takes 248 Earth years. This means that, since its discovery in 1930, it still has over 160 years to go until it has made a complete orbit around the Sun.

4. Pluto’s atmosphere is composed of a thin layer of gas containing carbon monoxide, methane, and nitrogen. Its atmospheric pressure has been estimated to be 1/700,000 compared with that of earth.

5. Pluto orbits the Sun on a different plane than the 8 planets, going over them and below them.

6. Pluto has four identified moons, Charon, the largest is not much smaller than Pluto itself. (Pluto is 2,280 kilometers wide, Charon is 1,212 kilometers wide). The other 3 are Nix, Hydra, and newly discovered S/2011 P 1 on July of 2011.

7. A day on Pluto is equivalent to Earth’s 6 days and 9 hours, meaning that it has the second slowest rotation in the Solar System (after Venus, which takes 243 days to turn on its axis).

8. Pluto’s orbit is elliptical, meaning that it can come closer to the Sun than Neptune, but then go almost two billion kilometers further away from Neptune’s orbit.

9. Pluto is too faint to be seen with the naked eye. When viewed through a telescope, it looks like a star.

10. Pluto is cold: -233° C (-390° F), just 40° C (72° F) above absolute zero. At this temperature, all elements would be frozen except for neon, hydrogen, and helium.

BLACK HOLE


Black holes are termed as monsters of universe. Their gravitational pull is so strong that nothing, not even light 

( electromagnetic radiation ) can escape from it. This makes it impossible for humans to see them. A black hole

is formed when a giant star collapses due to its own gravity when it had used all its hydrogen fuel and shrinks 

to become a much smaller entity. this causes a lot of matter to be packed in a small space causing an immense 

increase in gravitational pull.

It Rains Diamond On Neptune and Uranus

Yes this is very unbelievable to know that two of our celestial neighbors, Neptune and Uranus, may contain more bling than all the jewelry stores on Earth combined. It is theorized that diamonds fall like raindrops from the atmospheres of both planets.


Neptune and Uranus contain a high proportion of methane, which campus researchers have now shown can turn into diamond and complex organic matter compounds at the high temperatures and pressures found inside these planets.Shock compression studies performed by Hirai et el recorded the transition of methane into diamond at 19 GPa and between 2200 and 3000 degrees Kelvin. The conversion of methane into diamond is primarily dependent on temperature, but the ambient pressure of the atmosphere is also important to consider 




In addition to being awesome, diamond rain could also account for the excess heat radiated from Neptune (in addition to heat from the sun). Energy released by diamonds falling and settling towards the planet’s core is thought to boost the magnetic field of Neptune, thus increasing the heat radiated from the planet (Sanders 1999 and Kerr 1999). Although diamond rain has not been a proven phenomenon, it is pretty amazing to imagine. Given the experimental evidence, it is also not an unlikely occurrence.

Facts about the Space Shuttle

Fact 1 – You could touch a Shuttle minutes after re-entry – Each Space Shuttle had about 30,000 tiles on their belly that acted as a heat shield when the spacecraft experienced searing heat of 1,650 “C (3,000 “F). The tiles were so efficient and cooled so fast, though, that you could hold one in your hand just minutes after they reached peak temperature.
Fact 2 – Columbia weighed more than 13 elephants – All of the Shuttle’s were heavy but Columbia, at 178,000 pounds, weighed more than about 13.4 African Elephants at 13,200 pounds each. In length, each Shuttle was longer than three school buses, with the full launch assembly about the same height as the Statue of Liberty.
Fact 3 – They could empty a pool in 25 seconds – Each Shuttle orbiter used so much fuel that they could drain 12 average sized swimming pools in five minutes. At launch an entire Shuttle launch assembly weighed 4.5 million pounds (2 million kg), but nearly 80% of this was fuel expended during launch.
Fact 4 – The tyres could support three jet airliners – Although each of the Shuttle’s tyres were not much bigger than those on a truck, they could withstand the load of three Boeing 747s or 40 NASCAR racecars hitting the pavement and decelerating from 250 mph (400 km/h).
Fact 5 – They travelled to Jupiter - Together the five Space Shuttles travelled a total distance of 826.7 million kilometres (513.7 million miles), which is equivalent to a journey from Earth to Jupiter and a third of the way back. Every orbiter also travelled further than the distance from the Earth to the Sun, except Challenger.

While humans may have stopped travelling beyond near-earth orbit since the end of the moon missions in the 1970s, we have learned more about the universe beyond our orbit in the past 40 years than ever before.  Here are just some of the most interesting facts about our solar system and the universe beyond.
1. Pluto Isn’t The Only Dwarf Planet

When the International Astronomical Union amended the definition of a planet in 2006, relegating Pluto to the status of a dwarf planet, many were surprised to learn of the existence of other dwarf planets which would keep Pluto company in this category of smaller celestial objects.  Eris, Haumea, Makemake and Ceres, which is located within the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, are all dwarf planets alongside Pluto by the 2006 IAU definition.
2. Saturn Has Huge Hurricanes

While hurricanes and typhoons on Earth can be incredibly destructive forces, those that have been observed on Saturn are even larger and faster.  In 2013, the Cassini spacecraft, which has been observing the planet since 2004, took pictures of a hurricane roughly 20x larger than the average ones you might find on Earth, with an eye 1,250 miles across.  Even this mega-storm isn’t a record-holder  however, with Cassini snapping a storm at the planet’s south pole with an eye 6,000 miles across, a full five times larger than the one observed in 2013.
3. Almost All Of The Solar System’s Mass Is The Sun

While most people are aware of just how much bigger than Earth planets like Jupiter (22 times wider) and Saturn are (18 times wider), these huge planets are made up of less dense material than asteroids, some moons and smaller planets like Earth and Mars. Because of this, 99% of the mass in the entire solar system is held within our parent star, the Sun.
4. There Are A LOT Of Stars In The Universe

We are located within a galaxy known as the Milky Way, within which are somewhere between 200 and 400 billion stars, each of which could potentially have one or more planets orbiting it.  Conservative estimates state that there are anywhere from 100 billion up to 1 trillion galaxies in the observable universe, giving a potential total of stars in the universe of 1022 to 1024 (10 sextillion-1septillion). It’s enough to make your brain ache.
5. A Supernova Can Be Seen From Earth

When a very large and massive star dies and goes supernova, it causes a huge explosion which throws out enormous amounts of light and radiation in a shock wave which travels at up to 30,000 kilometres per second.  On average, it is believed that three supernovas occur in our galaxy every century, and at least one has been observed on Earth with the naked eye.  In 1604, Johannes Kepler noted that a ‘new star’ had appeared in the sky, which was visible even during daytime for as long as three weeks.
6. What’s Left Behind Can Be The Densest Thing We Know Of
As a star goes supernova, most of its mass is ejected in the explosion and flies off into space, however the central region of the star collapses due to gravity.  As it does so, protons and electrons combine together to form a relatively small but highly dense mass of particles, known as a neutron star.  Neutron stars are generally only around 12 miles across, yet have anywhere between 1.5x and 3.2x the mass of our Sun, which itself is 218 times wider than Earth.  To put this into perspective, this would be equivalent to a sphere as wide as Brooklyn in New York weighing 500,000 times as much as the entirety of Earth.
7. Even The Closest Stars Are Moving Away From Us
The universe is constantly expanding, with the very fabric of space being stretched out as it does so.  It is for this reason that, even though the universe is reckoned to be approximately 13.79 billion years old, the edge of the observable universe is likely to be as much as 47 billion light years away.  If humans could one day somehow travel to other solar systems, the journey back to Earth would be further than the initial, outgoing journey was.
8. If The Sun Exploded, You Wouldn’t Even Know It

It seems incredible to think that this huge ball of burning gas that is responsible for us even being able to survive on this floating rock is so far away, it could disappear without us realising.  The key here is physics’ old friend the speed of light, the fastest that anything is believed to be able to travel.  The energy released by the sun collapsing in upon itself would speed towards the earth at near to or the same speed as the sun’s life itself, meaning that for the 8.5 minutes it takes for light to travel from the sun to Earth the Sun would not even exist and we would be absolutely clueless. But…
9. Life On Earth As We Know It Will Be Dead By Then
In the grand lifetime of a star, our sun is in its prime at the age of around 4.57 billion years old.  However, it is halfway through its ‘main sequence’, during which it converts around 600 million tons of hydrogen to helium in its core every second.  As time goes on and helium builds up, the sun burns more and more hydrogen, gradually increasing the amount of energy it emits – in 1.1 billion years’ time, the sun will be 10% brighter than today.  This will cause an unstoppable greenhouse effect, similar to that observable on Venus, and all water in the atmosphere will evaporate off into space.  After 3.5 billion years, all the oceans will boil and Earth’s transformation into a hot, desert planet will be complete.
10. The Sun Will Never Explode Naturally

While it is fun to speculate about what might happen if the Sun exploded, it simply doesn’t have the mass necessary to cause a supernova as it dies.  Instead, when the sun’s core runs out of hydrogen in about 6 billion years’ time, all the helium ash will collapse upon itself, heating the sun’s inert core and causing it to expand. The new ‘red giant’ sun will grow so large that it will engulf Mercury, Venus and eventually the Earth, potentially growing so large that its radius alone would be the current distance between Earth and the Sun, 92.96 million miles.

4. The Universe is expanding with acceleration
The 2011 Nobel Prize was awarded to three scientists for their discovery in 1998 that the Universe is expanding at great speed. It is believed that the dark energy is instrumental in drifting away the cosmos at great speed. This means that the farther is a galaxy from the Earth, the speed at which it is moving is accelerated.

5. The shape of the Universe is flat
The Universe expands due to gravitational pull based on the density of the matter. Therefore, if the density expands over and above a critical value, it will close; for instance like a sheet of paper. This means that once it reaches the zero point of expansion, it will start collapsing resulting into the “Big Crunch”.

Exploration of a River on Mars by ESA

The European Space Agency (ESA) recently released remarkable images of Reull Vallis - a river like structure on mars. These images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express using a high resolution stereo camera. These striking images serve as evidence regarding the existence of a huge river that ran across the red planet in the distant past.

As per ESA’s Mars Express team this structure was formed around 3.5 billion years ago. The images reveal a 1500 kilometre long river running from the Promethei Terra Highlands to the vast Hellas Basin. It is encompassed by many tributaries of which one can be seen cutting the main valley towards the upper north side. The image also shows that at a certain point the channel is 7 km wide and 300 metres deep.

ESA also specified that the sides of Reull Vallis were sharp as well as steep as per the pictures captured by them. It consists of parallel longitudinal features covering the floor of the channel. It is believed that such structures were formed because of the passage of loose debris or ice during the Amazonian period caused by glacial flow along the channel. Experts from ESA were of the opinion that the images resembled the morphology which is found in various regions of the earth affected by glaciations. 

Thus a brief look into the distant past of the red planet shows that Reull Vallis has experienced certain things that are not too dissimilar to events on our world today.

NASA Bombed Moon By A 2 Tonne Centaur Rocket- A $79 Million Science Experiment To Discover Water On Moon

In its quest to discover water on the moon, on 9th October 2009, at 7:31 a.m. ET, NASA bombed the moon by a 2.2 tonne empty rocket using LCROSS (Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite). The rocket crashed in the moon's surface at a speed of 5600 miles per hour. The target was a 60-mile-wide crater called Cabeus. The LCROSS crashed on the surface four minutes later.

It was hyped that the blast would create a large cloud of gas, dust and vaporized water ice going up to 6 miles high and which will be visible from the Earth. Although, millions who were watching the event live on the internet were left disappointed. There was barely a change observed in the crater where the missile hit. NASA claim to have gained a lot of new knowledge through the $79 million experiment.

The principal investigator, Anthony Colaprete quoted- "I'm not going to say anything about water or no water, but we got the data that we need" to answer the questions raised by many as to what have we gained from this experiment

The LCROSS carried a visible camera, near-infrared cameras, spectrometers and a visible radiometer to guide scientists from NASA to examine the resultant dust plume. Moon's surface is like a dry desert but scientists believe that some ice is trapped deep in the craters where the sunlight cannot penetrate.

Two American spacecrafts had earlier reported the presence of water on Moon by tracing the hints of Hydrogen and Oxygen- the two elements that make up the water. These constituents were found in frozen state in deep craters of the North and South poles.

Planets Replacing The Moon!

We all know since childhood that moon is the only natural satellite of the Earth, but have you ever imagined what our sky will look like if the moon gets replaced by the other planets of our solar system? What a sight it will be if we got to see Mars, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn instead of Moon?? (Of course we had to ignore for some times thoughts about tides and gravitation, but that’s the most interesting part of plunging in the pool of imagination without any limitations).

So what would we see if the moon gets replaced with Mars? This red planet named after Roman god of war is almost twice the size of the Moon, so it would appear twice as big in the Earth's sky. The surface of this planet which was earlier visible only through telescopes could now be seen just with our naked eyes. We would be able to see some interesting features like Vallis Marineris and Olympus Mons that are formed by the movement of dust storms across the planet. We would also be able to see the ice caps grow and shrink during the changing seasons.

Venus, the second planet from the Sun is three and a half times larger than the Moon. It would look as large in the sky as the Earth appeared to the Apollo astronauts while taking a walk on the surface of the Moon. Venus reflects six times more light than the Moon and it reaches its maximum brightness shortly before sunrise and after sunset, for which reason it has been referred to by ancient cultures as the Morning Star or Evening Star. It will be an amazingly bright object in the sky and the night skies would seem as bright as daylight.

Now the Blue planet, Neptune which is more than fourteen times larger than the Moon- you can imagine how gigantic it will look on the earth’s sky. In the daytime also this enormous blue balloon will dominate over the sun and the earth would come under the shadow for over an hour and half.

Saturn, which is almost 35 times larger than the Moon, this golden globe would cover nearly 18 degrees of the sky. In fact, it will be appropriate to call ourselves the satellite of Saturn than the other way around.

Now the last and king of all… Jupiter, which is forty times larger than the Moon. It would stretch 20 degrees across the sky. It will be so huge that we will not able to see the north and south poles of the planet. To visualize Jupiter taking the place of our Moon, we really have to use our imaginations.

The earth would be subject to the same tidal stresses caused by Jupiter's immense gravitation. Imagining life is little difficult as we will be in the midst of Jupiter's deadly radiation field. But as I said in the beginning, we have to make some allowances for imagination!
